The Dutch Warmblood Studbook of North America (KWPN-NA) has had a golden year with KWPN registered horses bringing home top honours at the Pan American Games and the North American Junior Young Riders Championships (NAJYRC.)
These horses featured diverse KWPN bloodlines, but showcased both the talent and the soundness that Dutch horses are known for. With horses as young as eight years old, like double Pan Am dressage medalist Sagacious HF, and as experienced as 17-year-old Douwe, Individual Gold medalist in the young riders division at NAJYRC, the KWPN horse once again proved its mettle against the best the world has to offer.

“It’s been a great year for KWPN horses,” said Christine McCarthy, the Chairman of the Board of the Directors of the KWPN-NA. “Both dressage and jumping horses have performed incredibly well. This is an affirmation for all breeders of KWPN horses who spend endless years pursuing the perfect cross of bloodlines.”

Two of the three members of the Gold-medal winning US dressage team rode KWPN horses. Christopher Hickey also earned the Individual Gold with the nine-year-old Regent. The gelding is owned by Brenna Kucinski and is by the Preferrent stallion Flemmingh. Lauren Sammis also rode Sagacious HF, a KWPN horse for the American team and also earned the Individual Silver medal. Hyperion Farms owns the precocious eight-year-old gelding by Welt Hit II.

On the American Bronze-medal winning show jumping team, three of the four horses are KWPN horses, including Laura Chapot’s Little Big Man (by Topas,) Lauren Hough’s Cassadora (by Indoctro) and Todd Minikus’s Pavarotti, who’s by Lancelot.

McCarthy continues, “Dutch breeders look not only at the pedigree and performance record, but also the soundness of the breeding stock. There is a saying, ‘if you want a sound horse, get a Dutch horse.’ It takes so long to train a dressage horse or jumper; longevity and soundness are essential.”

KWPN horses also claimed a variety of medals at the NAJYRC held in Lexington, VA, the first weekend in August. In the young rider dressage division, two members of the Region VII Gold-medal winning team rode KWPN horses?Jaclyn Meinen on Rockette DG, by Ferro, and Amanda Harlan on Liberte, by Flemmingh Preferrent. Meinen was the recipient of the Willy Arts Grant for Young Rider Development sponsored by Little Creek Farm.

Devon Kane, 21, rode off with the Individual Gold in the young rider dressage division on her 17-year-old KWPN gelding Douwe, by Damiro. The Wellington, FL, resident trains with Olympic medalist Michelle Gibson.

In the junior division, the immortal KWPN sire Contango fathered two medal winners. His son Oslo was on the Gold-medal winning Canadian team. Ramses, also a Contango son, earned Silver medals with his rider Kristin Becker - Team Silver with Region II as well as the Individual Silver. “Prepotent sires like Contango and Indoctro showcase the versatility of the KWPN horse,” McCarthy explained.

Across the pond, young KWPN horses were strutting their stuff at the World Championships for Young Horses in Verden, Germany. In the six-year-old division, Silver and Bronze went to Freebird (Olivi x Gribaldi) and Uzzo (Lancet x Indoctro), respectively.

As of July 31, the KWPN is currently ranked first in jumping, third in dressage and 10th in eventing by the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses.

In 1983, the Dutch Warmblood Studbook in North America was established as the North American Department of the Royal Warmblood Studbook of The Netherlands (KWPN) in order to promote breeding and enjoyment of the KWPN horse in North America.

Lucy Sheldrake, owner of Delaroche Stud in Haverford West is pleased to announce that Lauriston will be staying at her stud for the 2008 Stud Season.

Below you will find details on this excepional stallion.  For details on his stud fee and terms and conditions please email Lucy on: lucys@carretta.co.uk

Dark Brown, 16.2hh, 1985. Approved Elite AES Stallion.

LAURISTON was the winner of the German 6year old jumping Championships in ’92 with the record score of 9.7 for style and scope. Bred by Paul Schockemohle.
He was purchased by the Bolvorm Stables, Holland, for 2 million DM IN 1992.Under the name of Bolvorm’s Lauriston he continued his National and International career ridden by Jos Lansink and Ben Schroder, winning in Modena and Waterloo.
Lauriston sired 10 International horses from his first Dutch crop of foals. Amongst these Catapult (Billy Twomey and Michael Whitaker) and Promise Me the new Grand Prix horse of Ian Miller (Can). Peter Wilde won the Dutch Jumping Derby at Valkenswaard on Lauriston jr.

Ian Millar and Promise MeIan Millar and Promise Me competing at the Athens Olympics 2004

Rob Ehrens rode the mare Silanda successfully at International level under the name Annabel, her 7 year old daughter Oceline is now with Jeroen Dubbeldam. Both Promise Me (Toronto) and Lauriston jr (Verona) have won World Cup points and were in the prizes at Calgary. An amazing feat for any stallion to produce 2 World Cup horses in one year, even more so as Lauriston only had a fraction of the mares his contempories have covered.

Lausana and Liberty Life II were born in Germany prior to the export of Lauriston and are jumping for Spain and Germany. Lausanna is also jumping World Cups and was reserve during the World Equstrian Games in Jerez for the Spanish Team.

Laceful Z competed at the 2003 European Championships with Miranda de Neto. Lassandro and Nairobi are the latest additions to Lauriston’s international offspring. . Geoff Billington really rates his Largus as an international prospect. Jan Tops bought Nijhofs Maxim just before her accident.
The Zangersheide stallion Quick Lauro Z is out of a daughter of Lauriston, so are Drossage (Drossan x Lauriston), Highness (Royal Bravour x Lauriston), Oceline (Celano x Lauriston).

His German and Dutch breeding reports are also very positive. He has and index of 149 on the German ’96 rankings (100 is the average) and passes on very good conformation and temperaments with athletic and elevated powerful movement.
Not only does he throw show jumpers of the highest possible quality, he has also produced very exciting event and dressage prospects. James won The British Novice Eventing Championship at Gatcombe 2003 and Olympic Dressage rider Kirsty Mepham has high hopes of her latest Grand Prix ride Flyaway Mathere.
Lauriston is fully graded in Oldenburg and the Hannovarian Verband in Germany and the UK, KWPN Holland , Bayern Germany, Selle Francais in France and the AES and IHR in Ireland.

His sire is Latus I, ½ brother to Capitol I and II and full brother to Latus II. Latus I died as an eight year old when on lease to Zangersheide Stud. He did jump at 1.50 mtr. level before his untimely death.

Lauriston’s dam Gerlinde is by the international jumper Granit (by Goldfalk) and out of the famous international mare Andorra.( by Agram) She was unbeatable during her career ridden by Manfred Kloes.

Gerlinde also produced Nariston and Fundus, both approved in Oldenburg. Other well known stallions from this family are: Feinbrand, Dinar, Landfurst and Sadenio. The last two both out of Lauriston’s half sister Gardenia.
Also the Hamburg Derby Winner, Wendy, descends from this mare-line.
Lauriston bred 2 approved stallions so far: Nairobi, sold to the USA, and Agrovorm’s Paddington who is at present with Jos Lansink.
During the International Stallion Show at Zwolle in Holland Lauriston was presented with the honary titles of ‘Elite Performance Stallion’
AT LAST THERE IS NOW A PROVEN, TRULY WORLD CLASS SIRE STANDING IN BRITAIN!!!
